It has been argued that the front yard was a bridgehead for the Roman invasion of Britain. A central city stands on the foundations of the Romano-British city of Noviomagus Reginorum, capital of the Civitas Reginorum, & nigh to the Roman Palace of Fishbourne. Based on data from a Anglo-Saxon Chronicle it was captured towards the close of the fifth century, by Ælle, and renamed when his boy, Cissa. It was a primary city of the Kingdom of Sussex. A city streets have a cross-shaped layout, inherited from either either a Romans: radiating outward from a mediaeval market cross lead the North, South, East and West shopping streets. Quite an lot of the city walls are in place, & can be walked along for a select few of their length.

Chichester cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and contains the shrine to Saint Richard of Chichester. Its steeple, built of a light local stone, collapsed suddenly & was rebuilt in the period of the 19th century. In a nave of the cathedral can be seen the remains of the Roman mosaic pavement. a Cathedral is unusual inside the UK in with a separate bell tower two or three metres out of the independent building, like than integrated into it.

the city is renowned for the annual Chichester Festivities, a tierce-week humanistic discipline & music festival held inside July. A city is besides at home to the globe-an expert Chichester Festival Theatre whose annual summer year attracts a greatest calibre of actors, writers & directors & is widely considered one of a first annual cases around British theatre.

Chichester is at home to the Prebendal School established in 1497.

Or so Chichester is the significant Roman places of Fishbourne, and Chichester Harbour to which the city was attached per Chichester Canal, currently under restoration.

A patron saint of Chichester is Saint Giles.

Chichester is twinned by owning a cities of Chartres in France, and Ravenna in Italy.
